It's official, summer is over. Gone are the days of sweaty bike rides, Popsicles dripping all over your hands, and long days in the sun. As the playful shouts fade and the last ripples of cannon balls into the local swimming hole become still again, us Oregonians settle in for a chilly autumn. The air is changing. You shut the windows to your bedroom for the first time in months, you pull out the wool socks from the back of your top drawer, and you switch on the car heater that you haven't touched since late April. It's over. Face it. But don't get caught in the Oregon fall unprepared. Make sure you have the Shaky Hands "Top Five Must-Haves for Fall!"
Download free MP3s of "We Are Young" (off Lunglight) and "Allison and the Ancient Eyes" (off their new album, Let It Die) and peruse their favorite autumnal wares below.
1. The Garden Brand Pivot Leaf Rake - by Jeff Lehman (guitar)
I don't care how big your yard is, you gotta have this rake. Not only does it have a HUGE rake head that never misses a leaf (and let's face it, them leaves are gonna FALL), but the Garden Brand Pivot Leaf Rake's head pivots a whole 270 degrees for extra comfort and awesome leverage. Extend the cushioned aluminum handle over 48" to custom-fit your specific personality. Whether you're gonna tackle one leaf or 10,000, you just gotta have this rake.
2. LL Bean Cashmere Waffle Sweater, Quarter-Zip - by Nick Delffs (guitar and vocals)
You feel that? That’s the nipping air of fall creeping in through your inadequate-yet-cool-looking hipster sweatshirt. It's time to trade up (and by trade, of course, I mean purchase for a significant-yet-reasonable price)! This chill battling machine utilizes waffle knit technology to fend off the cold. The 100% cashmere fiber combines comfort and sophistication in one pretty damn good-looking sweater. The LL Bean Cashmere Waffle Sweater lets you laugh at the cold while looking sophisticated and smooth. Best of all, it comes in five different autumn-appropriate earthen tones.
3. Juicy Couture "Preppy Ski Headband" - by Jake Morris (drums)
This year, cold, red ears are out, and if I were you, I wouldn't leave the house wearing that played-out mid-90's looking beanie. Keep your ears warm while making a statement with the Juicy Couture "Preppy Ski Headband." This 100% wool headband will keep you looking cool while feeling warm. The "Preppy Couture" print and "Juicy Girls Club" patch screams to the world that not only do you like to be warm, you LOVE to look good. Dry clean only.
4. Wellington Boot Socks - by Mayhaw Hoons (bass)
Your trusty ol' pair of Wellies aren't complete without the original Wellington Boot Sock. These brisk blasting chill busters keep out the cold, and while we all know how good Wellies keep out water, without these socks, your feet may be dry but they'll be frozen solid. Who wants that? Quit having cold feet! With these socks, you'll make all the right moves (although they don't guarantee success in any area other than cold prevention).
5. A Harvest of Pumpkin and Squash cookbook by Lou Seibert Pappas - The Shaky Hands
If there is one thing we all agree on, it's this cook book. Lou leaves no stone uncovered in this comprehensive guide to everything pumpkin and squash. We never leave on a tour without it. In Denver, I don't think of the Hi-Dive, I think of Butternut Squash Puff. Chicago doesn't conjure images of loud shows in the Empty Bottle, it brings to mind warm and cozy nights with a bowl of chili, pumpkin style! Feed your soul this fall with the Harvest of Pumpkin and Squash cookbook, the ultimate companion to autumn.
