Who is Da Deputy?

Da Deputy is a young, ambitious lyricist trying to showcase his talent and provide a message of hope and inspiration to those with dreams of accomplishing greater goals.

At what point did you discover your talent?

I was 13 when I knew I could rap. My older Brother would always freestyle at football games and track meets. One day he was like, "Let me hear you rap. Write me something." So I wrote a verse that I'm sure would be horrible if it was read today (laughs), but he was so impressed. He was like "you're actually good!"

Have you ever doubted yourself or your career?

Yes, I think everybody doubts themselves at one time or another. I think at the time, I was just aggravated about my progress over the years. It felt like I wasn't going anywhere. I just had to keep it real with myself, I wasn't working hard enough.

Your sound. How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music?

I would describe it as very lyric based, witty and metaphorical. The music is designed to make people feel as if they're in the moment. It's very soulful, but still aggressive.

Who are some of your musical influences?

Chamillionaire, Kanye West, Eminem, J. Cole, Wale, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Nipsey Hussle, Dom Kennedy, Big K.R.I.T & Lupe Fiasco.

Who are you listening to?

Chamillionaire, Kanye West, Eminem, J. Cole, Wale, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Nipsey Hussle, Dom Kennedy, Big K.R.I.T, Lupe Fiasco, The Weeknd, Dizzy Wright, Logic, Miguel and a lot of chopped and screwed music.

Who are some artist you would like to work with?

Chamillionaire, Kanye West, Eminem, J. Cole, Wale, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Nipsey Hussle, Dom Kennedy, Big K.R.I.T, Lupe Fiasco, The Weeknd, Dizzy Wright, Logic, Miguel, Jay-Z, Beyonce, Jamie Foxx, Andre 3000, Adele, Bun B and Justin Timberlake.

When writing, where do you gain your inspiration?

I get inspiration from what's going on at that exact moment. It starts with the beat; I really become one with all the sounds. Then, I start writing down everything that comes to my mind and it all begins to come together.

How do you separate yourself from other artist?

Well, I look at what I do as a business and I take it seriously and approach everything in a professional manner. Whether it be the way I dress, the quality of beats I choose, the concepts of my songs; to the scripts for my videos - It's very original. I think that people will be impressed with my musical style compared to other rappers in the industry.

What can fans expect in 2014?

Great music, great videos and if Lord willing, some tours.

What is the best advice you've been given?

I actually chopped it up with Jon Connor backstage at the House of Blues in Dallas and he gave me some really good advice. One thing he told me was to stay focused and consistent.
