I met William Tsumpes, CEO of T3Motion Inc., a Costa Mesa, CA company, at Red Herring North America conference this month, which was held in Monterey, CA. Founded in 2006, T3Motion manufactures personal mobility vehicles that are engineered with advanced safety and mobility features. Keeping the target customer close to mind, the company offers several types of all-electric plug-in vehicles (EVs) that produce zero gas emissions. The California-based company was formed by a diverse group of experts from various backgrounds. The team was set on creating alternative vehicles in order to enhance the personal mobility markets around the world. When researching market needs, the team collected information and analyzed the functional needs and performance requirements by prospective customers. This process resulted in providing mobility solutions for fleets (B2B model) and direct to consumers (B2C model).
T3’s first product group, called the T3 Series, was launched in 2006 and have had extensive field trials since then. Mr. Tsumpes said that his company raised &47 million and is currently in the process of raising $20 million more. The T3 Series automobiles are designed to improve efficiency, reduce fatigue of drivers/operators, and increase the ability to interface with the community. Primary advantages include flexible mobility with net-zero emissions, operational costs of $ 0.10 a day and the ability to have 24 X 7 duty cycle.
Can T3Motion vehicles compete with the major automobile manufacturers?
Many traditional large automakers have moved into the plug-in and/or hybrid EV markets and EV offerings have been growing every year and today there are scores of models and options. T3 has directly targeted the professional public safety, private security and government markets, such as law enforcement entities, security patrols, airport or university campus security vehicles, and a number of U.S. government agencies, as well as the Department of Defense (DOD).
Tsumpes said that these scooter-like vehicles are effective in a variety of day-to-day professional applications with net-zero emissions, presenting significant reduction in the cost of 'fueling', maintenance, and more. Further, the vehicles can travel indoors and outdoors. T3Motion offers removable battery packs which give them operation capabilities of 24 hours a day; 7 days a week.
Where are the T3 automobiles deployed?
Tsumpes gave several examples: In community policing (several municipalities around the world, New York City subways), patrolling of airports (John-Wayne), military bases, university campuses, retail malls, and public event venues.
The company established a strong feedback loop from the get-go, which incorporates customer feedback for the design, features, and performance characteristics of the vehicles. This active dialogue has led to a clear understanding of the professional and fiscal needs of the law enforcement and private security markets.
