The Everything Christmas book review

everything christmas book

I purchased this book last year about one month before Christmas. I have to say, it is REALLY thick! I actually did not finish reading it yet! However, I have read enough that I can give you a good idea about the contents.

This book is just what it says. It tells a little about everything having to do with Christmas. Let me let you in on what each chapter contains:

  • The History of Christmas
  • Christmas Customs
  • Christmas Poetry
  • Carols
  • Life and Times of Santa
  • Deck the Halls
  • 20th Century American Christmas
  • ‘Tis More Blessed to Give Than to Receive
  • A Mass Media Christmas
  • Your Part of Town
  • Holiday Recipes
  • Gifts From the Kitchen and Garden
  • Party Ideas and Games
  • Christmas Around the World
  • Multicultural Celebrations

Whew! What a list!

There are a few chapters I found quite interesting, for one, chapter 8, the 20th Century American Christmas. This chapter lists the Christmas budget, advertising and stories starting in 1900 and carries on with the information through the years in increments of ten until 1990. It is really neat to see how things evolved!

Another favorite is chapter 12, Holiday Recipes. Of course this is self-explanatory. However there were a few recipes that caught my eye, such as: Applesauce Loaf, Blueberry Bread, Merry Mocha Coffee Mix, Cheese Latkes, Christmas Sweet and Sour Meatballs, Banana Split Cake, Maple Bells and Wassail.

Something else that I find really neat about this book is that in the, “Carols” chapter. It actually has the sheet music as well as the lyrics for the songs! I personally have never seen that before in a book that was not made solely for that purpose!

Most importantly, it tells us about the birth of Jesus! It also tells about how we began to celebrate Christmas in December and why. If you ever had any questions about anything having to do with Christmas, chances are you will find your answers in this very book!
