Moments ago Manny Pacquiao retained his WBO welterweight title against Joshua Clottey in a one sided decision victory.
Showing a tremendous pace from the outset, Pacquiao simply kept Clottey too busy to get many punches off. The overmatched Ghanaian employed his shell like defense to good effect again, but Pacquiao showed improved footwork in limiting Clottey's opportunities to catch him.
There were moments when Clottey's pinpoint punches caught Pacquiao, but he never got busy enough to win more than a couple of the closer rounds.
Clottey's defense was tight as always, and a lot of Pacquiao's punches were caught on the gloves, although the sheer volume of them put him way ahead on every scorecard, and needing a knockout in the later rounds.
The only problem Pacquiao still has is that he has always been easy to hit. Clottey was able to rock Pacquiao's head back a number of times but never often enough or hard enough to make much out of it.
A more cunning counter puncher might have a little more success, but few other fighters at welterweight could deal with the kind of barrage the always tough Clottey endured. Although Pacquiao lacked much head movement as he usually does, perennial rival Floyd Mayweather will not find much to draw comfort from if he intends to take on Pacquiao later on in the year.
In the tenth, it looked like Clottey might just be coming apart at the seams, as Pacquiao turned up the pace and found a way around his defenses on several occasions. In the last two rounds though he rallied, and with the end in sight let his hands go a little more, safe in the knowledge that he would probably be able to last the remainder of the fight.
Next for Clottey is unclear, without an immediate path open to him, he might want to consider taking on the loser of Mayweather vs. Mosley in May. Alternatively he could always move up to light middleweight and take on the winner of Miguel Cotto vs. Yuri Foreman.
Next for Pacquiao is the election in his home country, and possibly congressional duties. Bob Arum was confident that he would continue to fight either way though, so the search for his next opponent will probably begin after the election is over. Floyd Mayweather or Antonio Margarito are the favorites at the moment.

Harry Shaw, Pittsburgh PA: "Clottey is the kind of fighter who it looks like would win a lot more if he just threw more punches. Its easier said than done against someone like Pacquiao, but when he did let his hands go he did pretty well"

The fight was boring because of Clottey. But it revealed the PACMAN is human after all. The MUST up the ante against Mayweather if only to erase the ever growing cloud on his due to his refusal. He should now agree with olympic drug testing but also have Mayweather agree not to use painkillers that are banned in all the states except Nevada.
Super Floyd is the Floyd, I will turn Mosley fight downn, to face pacman now... Don't think I am avoiding Mosley I want pacquaio fight now but subject to olypic drug testing

a fighter knows if he could or could not knock his opponent out. in the case of clottery he knew he could not that's why he resorted to surviving than fighting. what a boring fight. congrats to pacman though...

Clottey used to much defense thus he was able to survive to the last bell. I guess Clottey was afraid that he could get KO if he let his defenses down. And becoz of that Clottey lost every round, even Clottey's coach begged him to open up and throw more punches but Clottey seem to have ignored him and stayed inside his clamshell like defense. Looks like Pacquiao was doing all the work. It seems Clottey was just there to collect the money. But once again Manny did not disappoint.

Manny wants it in the middle of the ring to fight blow by blow but clottey's sheel defense still difficult to knock him out but he can't that kind of fight.... If he punches all night long maybe hell get knock out cold by the pacman.
Clottey did not engage the PACMAN but he clearly showed he's stronger although afraid.

It became very boring because of the lack of drama. Like Larry Merchant always say. It does show that it's suicide if Manny goes up higher than welterweight. Legit welterweights can take his punches if they are careful.
I thought Manny came close to stopping him in the tenth I think it was, Clottey is tough though. Anyone think Pacquiao's performance will have scared Mayweather off for good?

Pacman prove us again that he is the pound - for - pound king in the world. He want the fans happy in return to their money's worth. Unlike little floyd always talk and talk a trash talker.. My honest opinion is, for the lack of fireworks, big welterweights like Clottey can handle the PAC's punches from a safe stance and distance. It was boring because Clottey refuses to engage. Maybe just maybe this can lure Floyd. He can't be scared after watching the fight unless he's got only 1 ball.

i dont believe clottey could knock out pacman if he tries to do it, the problem is if he tries to go for pacman chances are he could get KO'd thats why he put up that kind of defense cause he knows that when he go toe to toe with Pacman he will be the first to kiss the canvass, you could see in the fight even with his tight defense Pac still landed some shots what more if he let that hands go. Im satisfied with Pac what is not satisfying is the way Clottey fight, clearly he just wants to survived thats all
