The Dolby® Theatre℠ serves as a demonstration platform for the world’s hottest modernizations in entertainment technology, including Dolby® Atmos™, “a breakthrough audio technology that delivers the most natural, life-like sensory experience.” The Dolby Theatre displays Dolby 3D, an onscreen and venue imaging solution that provides audiences with a superior 3D experience. Dolby’s dominance as a leader in event technologies ensures that the productions are always the most stunning visually and audibly. As a world renowned production venue, the Dolby Theatre is known for other events such as IRIS by Cirque du Soleil, superstar concerts, the American Ballet Theatre and numerous Broadway shows. TV and awards events are frequently held at the Dolby Theatre and have included the American Idol finals, AFI Lifetime Achievement Awards, Daytime Emmy Awards, ESPY Awards and BET Awards.
For event attendees, the Dolby Theatre offers an experience like no other. As guests enter from Hollywood Boulevard, they are greeted by an immense threshold, created by Rockwell into the main entrance of the theater. A mammoth “Awards Walk,” highlighting former Best Picture Oscar® winners adorns limestone porticos, guiding the way via a grand staircase laden with rosy mosaic tiles up to the main entrance. The five-level theatre lobby is accented with rich cherry wood banisters, capped by an oval silver dome. This magnificent lobby design was inspired by a combination of Michelangelo’s Campodiglio in Rome and Busby Berkeley’s choreography. Inside the theater, the walls are embedded with a silver-leafed “tiara,” that serves as a ceiling grid for lighting apparatus. Shiny arches from the tiara reach down between the theatre’s box seats, creating a unbroken visually stunning ceiling. Everything about the design of the cutting edge theater is designed to keep viewers’ focus on the stage production and to foster an elevated theatrical experience between the stage players and the spectators. The use of specialty woods, rare fabrics, and artistic metallic accents create an incredible work of art leading to the glorious stage curtains of two shades of iridescent fabrics and an expensive looking bronze mesh. From the floor to the top of the proscenium, it measures 64 feet wide by 35 feet high and the main stage is the largest in the United States, at 120 feet wide and 75 feet deep.
Guided theatre tours are offered seven days a week, with rare production and performance schedule exceptions, from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm, departing every 30 minutes. The walking tour offers visitors architectural and historical highlights of the world-renowned venue, as well as a glimpse of the ultra-glamorous side of Dolby Theatre on Hollywood’s biggest night – the Oscars®.
