The two groups set out last year to develop a DIRTY DOZEN list of endocrine disruptors. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) describes the study here: “ EWG researchers compiled the new Dirty Dozen list by scouring the scientific literature and most hazardous and widely used hormone-disrupting chemicals that pollute the environment and ultimately our bodies. They frequently turn up in food, water and consumer products. Studies have linked them to a wide array of health problems.”

What can you do to reduce your exposure to these chemicals in your environment? First and foremost Read Labels. When you see these ingredients be sure to look for an alternative product. Consumers hold a lot of power in their purchasing dollars. Manufacturers will reconsider if they see that their products are being avoided because of harmful ingredients.

EWG suggests additional ways you can protect your exposure are: Buy organic and filter your water. Eat fresh instead of canned foods. Avoid plastic containers and wraps and check for phthalates in your skin care products. Watch for catch all terms like FRAGRANCE on the labels - select fragrance free options . Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter. Avoid non-stick pans and stain retardant materials.
