The election just started – for Thrasher’s 2012 Skater of the Year

Skater of the Year (aka, SOTY) is arguably the most sought-after pro skateboarding award out there.

Given out annually by Thrasher magazine since 1990, the title is granted to the pro skater who receives the most votes from the readers.

Past recipients include Daewon Song (2006), Geoff Rowley (2000), Bob Burnquist (1997), John Cardiel (1992) and Tony Hawk (1990). Only two skaters have won the SOTY twice: Danny Way (1991, 2004) and Chris Cole (2005, 2009).

For 2012, the race has started with no less than 48 candidates – talk about primaries!

Included in this huge list, my fellow countrymen Pedro Barros and Luan Oliveira, Austyn Gillette, Guy Mariano, Brandon Westgate, Collin Provost, “Figgy” (aka, Justin Figueroa), past winners such as Eric Koston (1996), Mike Carroll (1994) and Marc Johnson (2007), and, of course, last year’s winner Grant Taylor (check out his footage!).

This parade of radicalness needs to be trimmed down and it is your duty to select the finalists. Head over to poll and vote now!
