Senator John McCain wants to stop U.S. funds to the Egyptian military while President Obama keeps funding the Egyptian military but doesn’t want his left-wing liberal base to know he wants the funding to continue; or should I say he knows he must. We really had some choices back in 2008.
The Egyptian military is the only stabilizing force in Egypt and has been for the last sixty years. Without it the Muslim Brotherhood would have over run the country years ago.
Does not Sen. McCain know the only difference between the Brotherhood and the terrorist group Hamas is the name of the organization. Withdrawing funds from the Egyptian military is inviting a Brotherhood take over of the largest and most influential Arab country in the Middle East. Where does he thinks that leaves Israel? Where does that leave the U.S.?
Sen McCain says it isn’t moral to support their military with U.S. money. How does he think the U.S. was able to kick the Russians out of Egypt in 1972? Does $2 billion U.S. Dollars strike a familiar note.
The majority of Egyptians support the military in ridding themselves of the Brotherhood. The military had outlawed the Muslim Brotherhood for many years making them ineligible as a party to vote in national elections.
The military has been supported by the general public to maintain stability for many years. When the public did not like what they were doing they exerted political pressure for change; albeit through orchestrated demonstrations.
When the public wanted Mubarak out and rallied for universal elections, the military went along because they felt that the majority of Egyptians wanted someone besides the Brotherhood. But the non-Brotherhood supporters split into so many parties, none of them were able to hold back the tide of the Brotherhood win.
The military gave the civilian Brotherhood government a chance to govern. It did not take long for the generals to see Egypt was headed for a Theocracy state and Sharia Law.
So where are we headed. It appears that they will first subdue the Brotherhood, declare them a terrorist organization, ala Hamas and al-Qaida, call for another round of elections sans the Brotherhood when the situation stabilizes.
Meantime the insane Washinton rhetoric will continue, but I bet we will continue to fund the Egyptian military because not to do it will lead the Islamic extremist to completely control of the Middle East.
