The Eggshelland tradition continues after all

Eggshelland (with its dazzling Easter-themed display of thousands of vividly colored painted eggshells arranged in mosaic designs) was a Cleveland area tradition for 56 years. Presented each year between Palm Sunday and Easter on the front lawn of Lyndhurst couple Ron and Betty Manolio, the tradition seemed to come to an end after last year's display mainly due to the death of Ron Manolio in 2012. However, thanks to the Euclid Beach Boys, a local preservation group, Eggshelland lives again.

Eggshelland History First produced in 1957 with 750 eggshells, last year's display featured 21,630 eggshells arranged in various designs including a likeness of Ron Manolio in addition to a 50 foot cross and an Easter Bunny.

The family used outdoor sign paint enamel to paint the eggshells in 24 vibrant colors. The process to ready the shells includes making a hole the size of a dime in the shell, gently shaking out the contents of the egg, washing the shells and trimming the edges of the hole. Once the shells are painted they are then stored by color in boxes.

After talking the deal over with her children and grandchildren, Betty Manolio agreed to turn everything over to the Euclid Beach Boys and allow them to bring Eggshelland back to life for 2014.

Sponsored by Legacy Village (who also helped pay for the preservation), Eggshelland will be display on the tennis courts at the Lyndhurst Community Center from Saturday, April 12 through Saturday, April 19. Hours for walk-throughs are noon - 8 p.m. on April 12, 8:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. on April 13, 6 p.m.-8 p.m. on April 14 through April 18 and noon - 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 19.

The Easter Bunny will be making a special guest appearance on Saturday, April 19 and will be available for photos.

Admission to Eggshelland is free.

The Lyndhurst Community Center is located at 1341 Parkview Drive in the Cleveland suburb of Lyndhurst.
