The Edwardian Ball's Gorey Return to San Francisco for 2014

It's that time of year again dreary dearies: time to break out your top hat & tails, your bustle & bodice, your pocket watch and petticoat, and of course dancing shoes of all varieties. It's time once again for the Edwardian Ball!

This year, the event returns to the historic Regency Ballroom for two nights of dancing, drinking, and decadence. Each year, ball-goers seem to outdo the last with elaborate costumes, eccentric activities and carefree carousing. While the ball offers plenty of distractions with DJs, high flying acrobatics, live musical acts, exotic trinkets, and crafted cocktails, the main attraction is always the audience who invest days of careful planning to construct elaborate costumes that range from the hauntingly strange to the breathtakingly beautiful. This year's musical acts include Edwardian Ball veterans & co-hosts Rosin Coven & the Vau de Vire Society as well as the bell of the ball Jill Tracy performing Saturday evening.

Friday evening, party-goers will be privy to the world's fair—a bazaar featuring exquisite hand-made goods & gifts from splendorous gowns to tiny top hats. A couple of this writer's favorites are as follows: for reconstructed creations with a mermaid mystique, stop by Wayward Shifty's for a frilled collar, a tattered skirt, or a dapper vest. Or if it's a stylish authentic top hat you require, we recommend Paul's Hatworks, a Bay Area staple of haberdashery since 1918. Friday also features Bay Area local favorite Emcee Kingfish guiding party-goers through performances by Delachaux, Beso Negro, Unwoman, Major Powers and the Lo-Fi Symphony, and the Vau de Vire among others. Bicycle-powered Zoetropes by Cyclecide are sure to take your eyeballs for a spin while Kinetic Steamworks offers an homage de Gorey in the form of steam powered sofas of the Curious Sofa Garden.

Saturday, the ball returns for music and dancing with performances from the belle of the ball Jill Tracy, a fabulous fashion show featuring Dark Garden corsetry, and music by Miz Margo among many others. Both days will feature the talents of Shovelman, Malvoye the Mentalist, and the unsurpassed tour de force of humor & acrobatics Fou Fou Ha! Absinthe cocktails & steam-powered tea will keep you refreshed while dancing the night away in one of San Francisco's most lavish settings.

Not sure which day to attend? We recommend Friday for those hunting treasures & trinkets, or Saturday for those who are looking to break in their dancing shoes. Tickets can be purchased online at the Edwardian Ball's website or at the door (while they last). See you at the ball, San Francisco!
