How serious is the back to nature initiative that has inspired a plethora of open-air green markets in major American cities? So serious that a year ago the New York Botanical Garden launched an Edible Garden, whose mission is to bring locally-grown, seasonal food front and center in the lives of city-bound New Yorkers. Spread across the Botanical Garden's 250-acre expanse, The Edible Garden is comprised of numerous vegetable patches and other horticultural displays.

This weekend June 19 and 20, the garden begins its second season

(which runs through October 17). The program for this Saturday and Sunday is titled "Get Out and Grill" and will include a foray into unique and fun ways to use your grill. A Father's Day barbecue will be held on Sunday. An unnamed New York Yankees player will be making an appearance.

Four weekends throughout the season designated as "Garden to Table Festival Weekends" will feature appearances by top-name chefs, who will demonstrate cooking techniques for their favorite vegetables. This year's rotating cast is said to include Mario Batali, Lidia Bastianich, Daisy Martinez, Dan Barber, Rick Bayless, and Sara Moulton.

Admission for this weekend is $30 per day for adults, $28 for students and seniors, $8 for children, and free for members of the New York Botanical Garden. Proceeds benefit the Children’s Gardening program.

For information about future exhibits and tickets, email the New York Botanical Garden at ticketingsupport@nybg.org.

NOTE: If you buy tickets online for Garden to Table and Festival Weekends, your name is automatically entered in a monthly drawing for a chance to win one of 20 Anolon Ultra Clad 8-inch open skillets (retail value: $40).

The New York Botanical Garden is located at 200th Street & Kazimiroff Boulevard, Bronx.
