The economy needs to be Obama's top concern in his second term

Now that the inauguration is behind him, it is time for President Obama to get to work on the real issue on Americans minds: The economy.

As much as he and Vice President Joe Biden has made gun control a serious matter after the horrific mass murder at Sandy Hook, trying to control the bullets should not be Obama's main focus heading into in all-too important second term.

Obama needs to find a way to work with Congress to speed up the economic recovery that began in earnest last fall. True, the economy is in much better shape than it was in when he was first sworn into the oval office in 2008.

Look, everybody knows that the farthest that Obama is going to get on gun control was the 23 executive orders he signed to put a dent on gun violence. The gun law proposals that he and his team is sending to Congress is pretty much a dead deal is because the Republicans still control the House of Representatives. So that means no gun control package is going to make it out of there alive.

So that leaves the economy as potentially his lasting legacy. The unemployment is still to high for his liking and job growth is still too slow. He needs to focus his attention on the debt ceiling. As much as he talks a big game as to not compromising on the debt ceiling, he is not going to have any other choice but to try to work out a deal because there are Republicans in Congress that is crazy enough to drag the economy in the toilet if they do not get their way.

So, let local and state leaders debate on how much gun control they want in their communities. This is not and should not be Obama's main focus. His main focus should and always be about the economy.
