Today is Monday, January 20th 2014, and a day to celebrate and honor the life and works of a man whose words and actions continue to make a huge difference in all our lives. The dream that Martin Luther King spoke of all those years ago is still alive and well and moving forward. Each new generation is rediscovering his words and his vision of a world in which we can all live in tolerance, harmony and peace, and where people are judged solely on the content of their characters and not the color of their skin. He dreamt of a world in which basic human rights, along with kindness and compassion, would apply to each and every one of us, no matter our ethnicity or beliefs. His words still echo in our lives daily, where we continue to strive for the higher ideal he once described so well.
When we look around today at the changes that have taken place since Dr. King’s time, we realize that none of them would have been possible without the perseverance of those who worked, and continue to work, to help make that dream come true. Today, many are taking part in a “service” day, dedicating their time to others in the name of Dr. King and humanity. It serves as a reminder that every day is an opportunity to help each other, with kindness and tolerance.
Even the smallest act of kindness can change someone’s life. So as this day closes, remember to keep your hearts and minds open to those powerful words that Dr. King spoke as he began his speech all those years ago. “I have a dream.” Let’s keep paying it forward!
