The annual Drama League luncheon was held today, May 21st at the Marriott Marquis Hotel. Ugly Betty stars, Vanessa Williams, (Sondheim on Sondheim) and Michael Urie, (The Temperamentals) teamed up as hosts, singing a witty parody of “Together Wherever We Go” from Gypsy. Honored were the previous announced; Macy’s Parade and Entertainment Group for their Unique Contribution to the Theater. In turn they promised to keep on celebrating and promoting theater. This is important, because to a lot of people, the annual Macy’s Parade is their first exposure to the “Great White Way.” The director of “Fences,” Kenny Leon won the Julia Hanson Award for Excellence in Directing. His speech was a powerful commitment to regional theater and the community of theater. It was heartfelt and resonated into a standing ovation. “The Addams Family,” Nathan Lane, won for his Distinguished Achievement in Musical Theater. He talked about how the critics and award shows have ignored his show. He stated, in his house the Tony’s are now known as “Passover.” He also stated “Thank-God most of America, does not read.” There must be some truth to that, as “The Addams Family” is selling out to adoring audiences.

There were some surprises, as the winners were read out. Distinguished Production of a Play: “Red” was expected, as was the winner of Distinguished Revival of a Musical: "La Cage aux Follies." What was not expected was Distinguished Revival of a Play; A View from the Bridge nor the winner for Distinguished Production of a Musical -- "Sondheim on Sondheim." Does this mean “Fela,” my pick for Best Musical, could win the Tony’s? It came as no surprise or shock when Alfred Molina was awarded; distinguished performance for his work in "Red."

On hand were; Scarlett Johansson, who told about wanting to be young Cossette in Les Miz and eating onion soup at the Howard Johnson. Hugh Jackman who thanked and explained, where a missing Daniel Craig was, Christopher Walken who was brief, Sean Hayes who just makes me laugh, as well as most of the nominees.

Theater is a community and one that honors excellence and today made me proud to be a part of it.
