Ever since I published my article on The Doors contribution to Record Store Day (Saturday April 20), people have been asking what is Side by Side: Soul Kitchen? Well, the answer is in! The seven inch vinyl record (pictured above) is a milky clear “45”, the A side contains The doors Soul Kitchen and the B side is X’s version of Soul Kitchen. The Side by Side series is produced by Warner Records for Record Store Day. Here is a list of other Side by Side offerings.
X’s version of Soul Kitchen is of interest to Doors fans because it was X’s cover of Soul Kitchen that caught Ray Manzarek’s attention (either seeing X at the Whisky a Go-Go or from a demo X sent Manzarek). He then produced X’s ground breaking 1980 punk album Los Angeles.
The Doors Side by Side: Soul Kitchen is limited to 3000 copies. To find the nearest participating independent record store, please visit the Record Store Day website.
Note: John Densmore is launching his book tour for The Doors Unhinged: Jim Morrison’s Legacy on Trial on Record Store Day. Please see the related articles below for the listing of cities and stores for that book tour.
