At the center of Main Street, in Greenport, sits a quiet shop bursting with art and ideas for your home and holiday entertaining. The Doofpot is filled to the brim with ceramics and hand crafted glass from Italy and Europe.

Established in 1973, owners Mary Ann Zovro and Jaap Hilbrand, started importing tableware and home items from Holland, Portugal, Greece and England, slowly adding a wide range of Italian ceramics and jewelry from Venice, Florence and American designers. Over the years, they have created a unique combination of sea and Mediterranean cultural spirit in Greenport, Long Island.

Elegant & Appetizing Sea Motifs

The Caprese collection of coral sea-life ceramic designs from Northern Italy echo the Long Island lifestyle. Large serving dishes with life-like, brightly hand painted seafood, such as lobsters and whole fish, with matching silver serving spoons are an elegant presentation to any dinner table. Coral and starfish motifs and large fresh mussels and clams, hand painted on a pure white ceramic serving dishes are right at home in the Long Island port village of Greenport, N.Y.

American Designers

Enamel seashell tableware and accessories by American designer, Julia Knight are featured at the Doofpot. Brilliant colors and a distinct seashell motif define tableware that can be used daily or in the most elegant of settings. Selected items are sold separately or in sets and include a wide range of prices and colors.

Country Themes

There is no end to captivating and heart touching country themes at the Doofpot. Simple farm motifs from Puglia are almost childlike in their art depictions of small town farm life. Decorative roosters from the Tuscany region make a tall and colorful display. There is a wide array of plates, serving dishes, olive oil bottles, salt & pepper shakers and tableware with vibrant, colorful, life-like depictions of vegetables from the region. Ceramic serving trays with decorative pomegranates and leaves and other vegetables that look almost good enough to eat, line the shelves along the wall. A delicate apple and pear salt & pepper shakers sitting on a broad, extended leaf is a beautiful addition to any table. Hand painted plates and tableware with olive motifs remind you of the simplicity of Italian cooking. There are so many varieties -- really too many to describe.

Full Tableware Sets

The Doofpot carries a wide range of Deruta plates and tableware in a variety of colors and styles. Not just for decoration, says owner, Mary Ann Zovko, “all tableware have been tested and pass lead content standards in the United States and is safe for daily use”. It is also dishwasher safe but hand washing is preferred. “I have had my set for 30 years”, says Mary Ann. Items are sold separately and do not have to be purchased as full sets.

Delightful Kitchen Additions

New to the shop this year, is a collection of Italian serving dishes, cutting boards, spreaders that are a whimsical addition to any kitchen. Figures of hand painted ceramic mice, cheese, little pigs or fresh vegetables sit on contemporary square white plates. Elegant yet fun, these dishes speak to our earliest memories of food as children, as well as, to our most discriminating tastes today.

Imported Hand painted Tabletops

The Doofpot carries a wide selection of hand painted tabletops from Italy in a range of sizes. Each comes with a brass galvanized iron stand. They range in price depending on the size of the table.

Pricing at The Doofpot is competitive and range from just a few dollars for a salt & pepper shaker to the higher range for larger items and tabletops. The Doofpot does not currently have a website but the owners will be happy to answer questions on product availability and pricing.
