There are many questions regarding your dog’s eyes, eyesight and eye care. Caring for the eyes of your dog is all part of your responsibility as the pet parent. Dogs do have great eye sight and their eyes should be monitored and protected from injury. Your local Rockford area veterinarian as listed below (or one closest to your home) can help you answer questions regarding your dogs eyes as well as diagnose and treat eye problems affecting dogs.
How does a dog’s eyes and eyesight actually differ from ours? Many have said dogs cannot see in color and I myself have often wondered how true that may be. I know for a fact that my little Chihuahua likes certain toys of a certain color, which made me wonder how he can distinguish between those particular toys. The truth is that dogs do indeed see color, although their perception may not be as true and vivid as we see things. Dogs cannot differentiate between shades of red, orange, yellow and green but can visualize certain shades of blue and gray.
A dog’s eyesight differs greatly from ours since a dog has great night vision, can see well in dim light and can detect images and movement much quicker than we can. In fact they have better peripheral vision than most humans. Dogs may not be good with color and depth perception but do excel in other ways that we do not.
Dogs can be susceptible to a number of eye problems, many that can be prevented. Dogs are affected with glaucoma, eye inflammation and ulcers to the cornea. Some of the causes of eye problems include foreign objects in the eyes, shampoo in the eye during a bath, a scratched eye during a fight, aging disorders, just to name a few.
According to the Organic Pet Digest, there are eight disorders that can affect your dog. The most common eye problems affecting dogs are cataracts, inflammation, pink eye, corneal ulcers, in-grown eyelid, prolapse of a third eyelid, injuries and irritation. Although not all conditions are preventable, there are symptoms to be aware of indicative of an eye injury or disorder, such as – drainage of the eye, cloudiness, redness, bulging, eye closed, sensitivity to light, excessive tearing, constantly pawing at the eye as well as rubbing the face and eye area along the carpet. If you notice any of these symptoms, check your dog’s eyes to see if there is anything you can do to help, such as wash out the eye for minor problems. If the problem looks more serious and you have concerns as to the diagnosis of the condition, medical attention may be warranted.
Not all injuries and conditions are preventable, but you can do your best to keep your dog’s eyes in a healthy state. Always start with a well-balanced nutritional diet, supplementing alternately with leafy vegetables, parsley, carrots, blue or purple berries and sesame or sunflower seeds. Speak with your veterinarian before adding other foods to your dog’s diet. Ask him also about the benefits of adding vitamin A, C or D as well as Zinc, Bioflavonoids and Pycnogenols. For added protection, it would be wise to have a pet-approved eye cleaner at home to keep the eyes clean, free from debris and excess eye discharge.
