You're in the middle of shopping for your groceries and your child has been very difficult all day, then suddenly that little one decides they have had enough of this boring task and starts screaming and crying for no apparent reason! Oh no here we go again! It seems that recently your child wants to cry and scream over everything, even a toy that doesn't want to " work right." Welcome to the world of tantrums! There are many reasons why children throw fits so to say, and there is no set age as to when they will start or end this behavior. However, you can deal with these stressful bouts of rage without loosing your mind or cool in the process. Here are some rules to go by:
- First make sure your kid is never too hungry or thirsty while out running errands. This is important as children get very upset if their little bodies are in need of fuel. Tip: Pack a snack bag of their favorite food, and a cup or box of juice or water. This way you will be ready in an instant if that tiny belly starts to growl.
- Even if your child is too young to understand, talk to them to show them you understand they are upset. A comforting hug and kiss will reassure them that things are alright.
- Even if it is inconvenient for you, if your child is being completely unreasonable leave where ever you are and take them home. Tip: If you can not leave for any reason, take your child either to the bathroom or car and give them time to cool down. Show your child their behavior will not be rewarded if they are acting this way.
- Like food fuel your kids need sleep. If you skip a nap your child is far more likely to be grumpy and not willing to work with you. Tip: try not to skip naps, and always remember that your little ones need more rest the younger they are.
- Your kids love you! They will learn from you how to deal with different situations. Keep yourself CALM, trust me no one knows better than your kids when you are upset. Do NOT take your anger out on them because like you nothing is solved by yelling.
- Make sure Mommy is not hungry or tired either! It is very important to take care of yourself as well.
There are a few Don'ts that you need to remember when you are dealing with a tantrum:
- Do NOT reward the child with a toy or candy to keep them quiet. Your child will figure out that they can get what they want by throwing fits.
- Do Not yell at your little one. The only response will be more crying.
- Do Not hit your child. Your little child will respond much better to calm love and understanding far better. Besides, you don't want them to learn to hit others.
By following these tips I hope you find peace of mind in how to handle the big T. Tantrums are no fun for anyone. Always ask other moms for help. When you feel alone, remember we have all been there and are more than willing to lend a helping hand or a word of advise. Best wishes!
