Ubisoft has lifted the veil today on the new engine powering, The Division. Dubbed, Snowdrop, this software has been built from the ground up specifically for next-gen and PC. TD developer, Massive Entertainment, aims to deliver a level of detail and realism never before achieved in gaming with their new tech.

“Snowdrop is dynamic, interconnected and united system,” said Massive Entertainment on Ubisoft’s official blog site. For the dev team, empowerment, real-time and fun are the main pillars for this engine. The results? The Division is always playable during development, thanks to Snowdrop. Developers are even able to access “the game directly within the engine,” allowing streamlined implementation and playtesting, which according to Massive, creates “a high level of coherence within the game.”

The engine reveal trailer, features some unique elements in The Division’s ambitious open world. “Never before has a video game reached this level of detail,” said Ubisoft. Procedural destruction stuck out most in the footage; because, well, destructible environments affect gameplay and strategy. How this affects the game specifically remains to be seen, but Ubisoft encourages players to plan tactics accordingly based on this dynamic. Battlefield 4 destructible environments comes to mind, but let’s wait until we see TD in full swing.

Another point of interest displayed during the Snowdrop trailer was weather. Unfortunately the video said little to nothing on this feature. We do know that elements, such as snow, will affect the environment, visually. However, how weather could potentially alter gameplay has yet to be detailed. Though we hope this has a profound effect on survivability.

We’re hoping to get more information from Massive Entertainment in the ensuing year. For now check out the Snowdrop trailer for yourself.

The Division is slated to release in Fall of 2014 for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
