What do you get an ICON? Diana Ross is turning 70; the Diva of all divas is reaching a milestone on Wednesday. Born in Detroit on March 26, 1944, Ross rose to fame as one of the original Supremes.
During the 1960’s the Supremes became one of Motown’s most successful act and is to this day America's most beloved female vocal group. In the 70’s Ross left the Supremes and went solo releasing her debut album simply titled, Diana Ross.
Ross displayed her range in talents when she starred in “Lady Sings the Blues” her acting was recognized with a Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations. Ross continued to shine on the big screen with notable performances in Mahogany and The Wiz.
Billboard magazine named Ross “Female Entertainer of the Century” and in 1993 The Guinness Book of World Records declared Ross the most successful female music artist in history due to her success in the United States and United Kingdom for having more hits than any female artist in the charts with a career total of 70 hit singles with her work with the Supremes and as a solo artist. Ross has sold more than 100 million records worldwide.
It hasn’t always been good times for Ross you may recall back in 2002, Ross was arrested in Tucson, Arizona for DUI while undergoing substance abuse treatment at a local rehabilitation facility. Ross later served a two-day sentence near her home in Connecticut.
Ross has inspired the careers of many high profile singers today including Mariah Carey, Leona Lewis and Beyoncé. There would be no Broadway musical or movie of “Dream girls” if it wasn’t for Ross and her legacy with the Supremes.
Diana Ross has five children, two grandchildren and she has been married twice.
