According to Newsarama.com on Dec. 24, with the popularity of Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel" movie and the previous film, "Superman Returns", it appears that an interest in Peter Segal's "Shazam" film has been shoved a good distance beyond the back burner. The prospective film's full name is "Billy Batson and the Legend of Shazam" and Segal blames the recent onslaught of "Superman" films for the delay of his project.
"The thing is, Shazam has always lived this tortured life going against Superman. This dates back to the 1930s. Because Captain Marvel had similar powers to Superman, the DC folks back then sued what was the most popular comic book on the stands at that time. Years later, they bought it and it became a DC property but, as long as Superman stays hot in the market place, there seems like a little bit of a crossover between the two characters".
Segal had remarked that the buzz about the "Shazam" film had really started to amplify due to the rather unsuccessful "Superman Return" release, but since Zack Snyder stole the show with "Man of Steel", it appears there could be an extreme difficulty in bringing the Shazam character into the DC Cinematic Universe.
The significance of Shazam with dependent upon its humor and the similarities of the character somewhat mirrors Superman's due to the fact he's a boy trapped inside a man's body. Both are journalists, but use different media.
