Behavior issues go hand and hand with Autism, but not all defiance is, well defiance. Sometimes a child is not complying simply because they can’t do so, not because they don’t want to. This can be challenging at times to determine the difference, but is determinable by someone who has spent a great deal of time with the child and knows them very well.
Refusing to Complete a Writing Task
There are numerous muscles used to complete the task of writing as well as the utilization of multiple areas of the brain, it is just something most of us take for granted because it comes naturally to those who have a brain that is naturally balanced.
Sometimes we just don’t give the benefit of the doubt enough when it comes to our children. With autism spectrum there are many issues that have nothing to do with manipulation. And if we believe our child is just trying to manipulate us, then we cannot help them.
Things to Consider first as reasons for the Behavior
Does my child have sensory issues? If you don’t know the answer to this, then you must get an evaluation and also ask yourself some questions about your child.
If your child does, make sure this is not a lack of sensory as well as over-stimulation. Under-stimulation causes a child to be fidget and spacey as well. Sensory issues often manifest as behavior, the body is over-taxed and gets irritable. This does not mean the child shouldn't learn alternatives on how to express themselves, it just means THIS IS what is happening as opposed to just misbehaving.
Have I offered Positive Reinforcement?
If you have offered positive reinforcement and are still experiencing the behavior, and have offered the highest levels, then it is not a choice. I happen to believe Disney World itself is highly motivating, and when our son had meltdowns when on vacation it was clear it was out of his control.
Is my Child Getting ill, or otherwise not feeling well?
Children on the spectrum do tend to be sick more often; there are a lot of studies still being completed gathering connections between the autism and auto-immune disorders, and the brain-gut connection. One thing I do know, is a day or so before my son develops any kind of fever or virus he is extra stimmy, extra bouncy, and of course then having more behaviors. This is also the case when any of us do not feel well, sometimes we can’t control it, sometimes it can control us, and if you are someone who has limited knowledge on how to behave or has to remember so many things that do not come naturally, when you are sick, you may not care as much.
Autism and Anxiety go Hand and Hand
There will be times your child will just feel threatened, and you may not understand it. Behavior escalates because of anxiety and the flight or fight response being triggered; this is biological and not a choice. Adults with anxiety can make choices to help them deal, but children with autism do not understand this yet, and are children first.
It is important to instill the correct way to behave when we are disappointed, and when we do not feel well. Children with Autism, generally do not naturally learn these behaviors, and do not model well. So even if you are a very level-headed and patient person, your child will not pick that up from you, but fortunately for them, you are such a person. Which means you will be able to spend the enormous time involved in teaching them.
