Okay, so I literally missed writing about this when the Road Show was in the general area (Boston...yesterday), but I still want to tell you about it because we can all hold out hope for an extended tour or at the very least a DVD release.
I'm talking about The Devil’s Carnival.
From the official website:
After the triumphant collaboration on 2008’s Repo! THE GENETIC OPERA, a film hailed by The Hollywood Reporter as “the next Rocky Horror Picture Show,” director Darren Lynn Bousman and writer/actor Terrance Zdunich had no where to go but down. ALL THE WAY DOWN TO HELL. These showbiz black sheep invite you to dive into the ashes with them on their newest musical movie experience, THE DEVIL’S CARNIVAL.
I’ve been sitting here staring at my screen, not knowing how to even begin to talk about this film, and if you’ve see Repo!, you can understand why. But let's start with the premise. A mother, father, and daughter walk into a carnival.... I’m sure there's a joke in there somewhere, but for our purposes, the joke is on them as the carnival is run by Lucifer himself and they are in for the ride of their lives--or deaths.
This movie puts an increasingly surreal spin on the carnival freakshow that has terrified audiences since the dawn of horror film. (Don’t get me wrong, I love the freakshow. In fact, some of people I admire most are side show performers). The visual effects and cinematography will stun and creep you out at the same time. The music...well, go ahead and click here to get a taste of it for yourself. Also while you're there, explore this darkly interactive website that will surely make your head spin. “La, la, la. It’s off to hell we go.”
On the site you can buy merch like posters, T-shirts, and ringtones. You can also play a game on the way in, although I’m not sure what happens if you lose. Or worse...if you win. Because while winning may have worked for Charlie Sheen, not so much for our family of three.
Now let me tell you about rest of the cast. There are some folks you may expect to see from Repo! Ogre, Alexa Vega, and Terrance Zdunich. Then there are the others, including Dayton Callie from Sons of Anarchy, M. Shawn “Clown” Crahan of Slipknot, Mighty Mike Murga (Mini Kiss, oh yeah!), Ivan Moody of Five Finger Death Punch.. Oh, did I mention Paul Sorvino? Fabulous!
So would I see it? Before I really looked into the trailer, I wasn't sure. After all, I wasn’t a huge fan of Repo! The Genetic Opera, but I do own it and want to give it another chance. So yeah, I would see it. The Devil’s Carnival looks really creative and visually stunning and I'm always up for that. (Ask me about The Theatre Bizarre, which I watched the other night, but is a totally differnt article.)
And then there is one huge draw for me to watch The Devil's Carnival. I'm not going to tell you what it is though. Go ahead and watch the trailer that I've linked to and see if you can figure it out.
Happy viewing and as always, if you have seen the film or want to see the film, let me know what you think!
