Director and co-writer, Peter Jackson's second prequel installment, The Desolation of Smaug, continues the story of dwarf leader, Thorin Oakenshield and his quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and the hoard of gold which lies within; gold which will return them to the life of abundance they so enjoyed during his grandfather, King Thror's reign.
But first they must defeat the dragon, Smaug, who destroyed Dale--the town near the Lonely Mountain--and later defeated the dwarves, driving them from the mountain itself, claiming their treasure, along with the Arkenstone, the very stone that Thorin--Gandalf the wizard informs him--he needs to become king.
And that's where master thief, Bilbo Baggins comes into play.
Smaug waits for them in the nether of the mountain, enemy Orcs are at their back, and giant spiders occupy the forest through which they have to pass.
The Desolation of Smaug stars Richard Armitage as Thorin, Ian McKellen, Evangeline Lilly (Lost) as Tauriel, Orlando Bloom, Martin Freeman (Bilbo Baggins), and Benedict Cumberbatch (August: Osage County) as Smaug/necromancer.
Opens Friday, December 13, 2013.
