At the 84th annual Academy Awards Sunday night, the screenwriters for The Descendants starring George Clooney took home Oscars for Best Adapted Screenplay. Their work was an adaptation of the book of the same name by Kaui Hart Hemmings.
The screenwriters for The Descendants are the film's director Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon, and Jim Rash. A balance of tragedy and comedy, the story of The Descendants required the handling of complex human relationships within a complicated setting that could have gone either too sentimental or too slapstick. The script managed to show comedy and tragedy happening within moments of one another, or even as sides of the same exact moment, as often surprisingly happens in real life.
Other nominated films in the category of Best Adapted Screenplay were Hugo, The Ides of March, Moneyball, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
Best Original Screenplay went to Woody Allen for Midnight in Paris.
Congratulations to the writers of The Descendants!
