Android smartphones killed Windows Mobile
The updated iPhone operating system was a lot more business friendly. The new iPhone hardware also allowed for faster 3G Internet speeds. The HTC Diamond and HTC Touch Pro tried to compete with the iPhone, but completely failed to keep up Windows Mobile's relevancy.
The final nail in Windows Mobile's coffin occurred this past autumn where many phones running Android debuted: the HTC Hero, the Motorola Droid, the myTouch, and many others. Android's operating system, which is similar in many ways to that of Windows Mobile, is on its way to becoming the dominant smartphone operating system. It is quite possible that Android headsets will surpass iPhones in sales. Just look how fast the Motorola Droid has been selling.
We want to thank all the folks at Windows Mobile for being pioneers in mobile handhelds and smartphones. They have made our lives very exciting for the past decade. We are very sad to see the death of their operating system, but accept the fact that everybody and everything dies eventually.

I won't be sad to see the inevitable axing of Windows Mobile.
Microsoft never innovated. Never. Windows Mobile is based on the Pocket PC from the 1990s, which was Microsoft's attempt to copy Palm. Now that the iPhone is popular, Microsoft is making a vein and silly attempt to copy the iPhone.
Microsoft is alone at trying to sell licenses for a mobile operating system. Nobody else is doing it, because it is simply an unviable business model.
5 years ago, Microsoft should have created an open-source operating system for mobiles. But Microsoft denounced open-source (free) software, now it is too late to compete with Google's Android phone software.
So, at this stage, I would not invest in the Windows Mobile phone platform, which is in its final death throws. If purchasing a mobile handset or smartphone, make sure it is anything but a Windows Mobile phone.
The debate about which platform is nice, and which isn't, is no longer relevant for Windows Mobile, as the platform itse
You really think Microsoft has given up? You are so silly or simply don't have enough knowledge about the field you are writing about. You will be seeing their attempt at this very soon ;) They've got the money, remember?
"We are very sad to see the death of their operating system, but accept the fact is that everybody and everything dies eventually. " Even Android, even Google.
Are you serious? Windows Mobile done? Not sure why there are so many people that think multiple OS's can't survive, even in the mobile space.
Jennifer needs to get a clue...
To Jennifer. Microsoft doesn't innovate?? What planet have you been living on for the past 20 years. MS hires some of the most brilliant developers in the world. And you're trying to tell us that these developers can only copy?? Microsoft has definitely lost their market share for lack of insight and not because of innovation. They had a different marketing goal that was primarily targeting businesses and not consumers. Now that Microsoft has smartened up, Windows Mobile 7 is highly expected to put the brakes on Apple's growing dominance. As a mobile software developer, why the hell should I hand over 30% of my application's profit to Apple? The iPhone is a fad and is only meant to benefit end-users and Apple and not the developer. As Android and Windows Mobile continue to grow, more developers will dump Apple's platform.
