The Day The Music Died: Remembering Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper
We've all heard the song, "American Pie" about The Day The Music Died by Don McClean. However, some don't know that it's actually about the death of music giants Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper.
"I had to explain to my kids what 'The Day The Music Died' meant," said Nina in Cleveland. February 3rd marks the 52nd anniversary of when Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper boared a plane, never to be seen again.
After problems with their bus, Buddy Holly chartered a plane. He took one seat, After Holly's tour mate, Waylon Jennings gave up his seat to The Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens one a coin toss for the last seat. The plane crashed killing all aboard just minutes after take off.
Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper went down in history. After having the song "American Pie" written about their deaths, various films were also made about their lives and deaths. Actors such as Gary Busey and Lou Diamond Phillips have stepped into the shoes of the legendary musicians for films such as "The Buddy Holly Story" and "La Bamba."
