The David Whitney Building receives funding for revival in downtown Detroit

The historic and stunning David Whitney Building, located at 1553 Woodward in downtown Detroit, has become the next big project for the area.

The state of Michigan approved Whitney Partners LLC for a $1 million community revitalization grant with a $7.5 million loan, according to the Detroit News.

The newly renovated Broderick Tower is the Whitney’s fellow bookend to the city. Standing tall on the west side of Woodward at Park Avenue, the 1915 building welcomes visitors to the fair Motor City.

Equipped with a beautiful four-story shopping atrium, the huge structure has retail on both of its street levels – Woodward and Washington – and just so happens to be the building at which the People Mover stops for Grand Circus Park.

Whitney Partners are collaborating with Aloft Hotels on this mix-use space, with the hopes of creating a hotel and apartments above the stunning shopping center, according to Crain’s Detroit.

The Whitney was renovated (i.e. ruined) in 1959, and there are plans to restore it to its original edifice during the overhaul.

There is much speculation as to when the Whitney will be ready to open, with various reports citing mid-2014 as the end date.
