The Dave Matthews Band came away empty-handed from the Grammy Awards last night but delivered one of the more lively performances of the broadcast.
DMB's Big Whiskey & The GrooGrux King had been nominated for two awards, Album of the Year and Best Rock Album. Though they were expected to lose to Taylor Swift for Album of the Year, many observers thought the band would pull out Best Rock Album. But that award went to Green Day instead.
The Dave Matthews Band is one of the most exciting live bands in the world, but they took things up a notch for their Grammy performance, inviting 40 additional musicians on stage for their rendition of "You & Me."
The extras - a choir, horn & string sections, percussionists - were teenage students who are part of the Grammy in the Schools program. The students added an extra kick to the performance, and so did Matthews with his freaky dancing.
The Grammys have not been kind to the Dave Matthews Band over the years. In addition to the infamous Grammy snub last year, the group has just one win among 14 nominations. The victory came when "So Much To Say" captured Best Rock Group Performance in 1997. Matthews also won a Grammy as a solo artist when "Gravedigger" took home Best Male Rock performance in 2004.

I still love you Dave!
Hands down they were the best of the Grammy broadcast. Too bad the Recording academy fails to see their greatness. But they failed to reward the legendary Neil Young too.. Maybe DMB has to wait until they are all in their mid-60's to get an award.. probably be honored by Musicares Band of the Year. You have to admit the Grammies are not about music or musicianship.. it has become a pointless spectacle of a show.. it's a popularity contest.
