The danger of a blood clot depends on where it is

Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton is being treated for for her recent concussion along with a blood clot that was found in a vein in the space between her brain and skull. Just how serious it is to the former First Lady remains to be seen after further testing.

What are blood clots

The blood is the final product of blood coagulation in the process hemostasis. The blood and thickens into a clot usually after a heart condition, injury, clogged arteries or some other condition.

Where they occur

In veins going toward the heart, legs, neck, brain or lungs. Clots are dangerous when they travel to the brain because they can cause a stroke or to the lungs which can result in death.

Blood clot treatment

Prevention and treatment for blood clot reduces the risk of heart attack, stroke or pulmonary embolism. Anticoagulants like Heparin and Warfarin can be used to inhibit the formation and growth of blood clots.

What puts you at risk

High blood pressure, diabetes, birth control pills, pregnancy, stroke, recent surgery, prolonged sitting, heart and circulation problems especially atrial fibrillation, which cause an irregular heartbeat can raise your chances of developing a blood clot.
