The Daily Grind: Pacquiao-Cotto Directory, Pressure on Mayweather Jr., Dawson-Johnson II, and more

Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto

It’s always nice when you find a diamond in the rough.

In the always competitive world of boxing coverage, there seem to be more online sites than ever offering coverage of the sweet science and it can be hard keeping track of all of the news. One site that has been around for the long haul and stood the test of time is Bragging Rights Corner, (www.BraggingRightsCorner.com).

The self-proclaimed ‘Hottest Corner in Boxing’ emerged around the turn of the century and has blossomed into one of the most diverse and comprehensive boxing news sites on the net. Much like a fighter’s career the site has seen its share of ups and downs but is recently on a hot streak, in particular with its coverage of the upcoming Manny Pacquiao-Miguel Cotto clash.

With writers based out of locations all over the world, Bragging Rights has featured several interesting articles on the bout, all from a different perspective. As is always the tradition with the site, all of their material can be found in an exclusive directory pertaining to the fight.

In September, photographer Francisco Guzman was on hand to capture the initial announcement of the bout at Yankees Stadium and from that moment forward the tone was set. Other exclusive pieces would follow in coming weeks, from Tony Montgomery claiming that Pacquiao was in deep trouble against Cotto, to Kenny Perrault brining up the suggestion that a Welterweight tournament would be extremely beneficial to the sport.

The directory also has exclusive poll results on a plethora of topics concerning the fight as well. The directory will be updated in coming weeks and anyone wanting to check it out can click here. Anyone interested in becoming a ‘friend’ with Bragging Rights Corner on Facebook can also click here.

It’s time for Floyd Mayweather to do his talking in the ring

I remember a time when Floyd Mayweather used to make news on all things positive. From the moment he defeated Genero Hernandez to win the WBC Jr. Lightweight crown in October of 1998, Mayweather joined the ranks as one of the sport’s most promising young champions. He would go on to have great success in the following years but in recent times the Grand Rapids native has seemed to make headlines in a much more negative light.

Mayweather was recently at it again when he went head to head with emcee and music personality R.A. the Rugged Man, who also happens to be a die hard boxing fan. From the get-go Mayweather was faced with a barrage of questions such as when would he be fighting somebody in his own weight class and why he has avoided various challenges in his career. As the interview continued Mayweather made a few eye-opening statements claiming that the sport of boxing would be ‘dead’ if he left again and that the ‘Philippines make the best enhancement drugs’, an obvious knock on Pacquiao and his recent accomplishments.

Whether you are a Pacquiao fan, hater, or somewhere in between, it would be best to look at the Filipino’s career with a heavy dose of objectivity. In doing that one would be able to give credit for the accomplishments he has produced in recent years as opposed to trying to tear the man down.

The best option for Mayweather at this point would be to let his actions in the ring start speaking for him. He seems to be a very young aged 32 and can erase the recent bad taste he has left in people’s mouths by simply getting down to work against the elite fighters in his weight class. Boxing fans have missed out on Mayweather taking on the likes of Antonio Margartio, Paul Williams, and Miguel Cotto in recent years but there is still time to turn things around. Let’s hope Floyd starts making the right decisions in the very near future.

Dawson and Johnson get ready to do it again

In April of last year Chad Dawson defended his WBC Light Heavyweight belt against rugged Glen Johnson at the St. Pete Times forum in Tampa, Florida. While Dawson came away with a unanimous decision victory by scores of 116-112 on all three scorecards that hardly told the story of the fight.

The bout was both competitive and action packed and Johnson had far more success with his pressure than many would have expected. As the bout reached its late stages Johnson continued to charge forward, even hurting his younger foe in one of the bout’s telling moments. When the verdict was announced some screamed robbery while others felt the right call was given. With both fighters feeling they deserved the victory, the two men will have a chance to do it again this coming Saturday night.

In rematch that is far more worthy and appealing than Dawson’s clear victory over Antonio Tarver in May of this year, the two fighters will square off on HBO’s World Championship Boxing, live from  the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut. The telecast kicks off at 9:30 PM/ET with an undercard attraction between come-backing Jr. Middleweight Alfredo Angulo and Harry Joe Yorgey.

Judah returns this Friday

When he returns to the ring this Friday night against Adailton De Jesus, it will be the first time in nearly a year that Zab Judah has set foot inside of a ring for a professional bout. He last saw action when he won a ten round decision against Ernest Johnson on the Joe Calzaghe-Roy Jones undercard and just three months before that he lost a technical decision against Joshua Clottey for the vacant IBF welterweight strap.

Judah has been staying in the headlines with some verbal chiding between possible future opponents while also stating his desires to return to his natural ‘home’ of 140 pounds. Having recently turned 32, this could be looked at as perhaps Zab’s last run towards a championship and all of the talking will go out the window come Friday when he meets De Jesus at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas. Judah was in attendance for last night’s Joseph Agbeko-Yonnhy Perez title fight at the Treasure Island Casino and seemed to be in great spirits.

Perez dethrones Agbeko in wild affair

Speaking of the Perez-Agbeko bout, did I mention that it was an all action thriller?  In one of this year’s best fights the two men went toe to toe for twelve entertaining rounds, with Perez scoring the mild upset by scores of 117-110 twice and 116-111. With the win the Columbian moves his record to 20-0 with 14 knockouts and more importantly seizes control of the IBF Bantamweight belt.

From the outset Perez seemed to shake Agbeko with the harder punches but the proud fighter from Ghana continued to apply pressure all night long. An accidental head butt would daze Agbeko in the tenth and a follow up barrage by Perez scored the bout’s only knockdown moments later. The action was fierce up until the final bell and it seemed to be a fight that could have gone either way. Both men elevated their statuses with their performances and a rematch would certainly be a welcome idea.

when i think of recent floyd i kinda think of apollo creed in the first Rocky or Rocky in Rocky III.he kinda lost the eye of the tiger or the hunger....it's like he's been fighting so long to make the big money and get the stardom he felt he should have and when he finally achieved that successes he got bored hence the multiple retirements....he was definitely a hungrier fighter in the past who called out everyone but was pretty much avoided. he couldnt get the fights he wanted back then against people like tzyu or freitas even though he did call them out. he also called shane out a few times.thats why he kept skipping dif weight class so he could get that big money fight.. but i think he'll prob fight pac or cotto and then maybe people will stop complaining...i heard he has a five fight deal so we'll be seeing alot of him im hoping. maybe he'll fight mosley who knows.he's still an all time great though but if he fights a few more names he could prob be mentioned in the top 5 alltime.

You've been reading too much cris...because everyones bashing floyd and now you are too....RA gave him exactly what he needed a rocket up his a s s....Oh yea 2000 and 10 is going to be great...can't wait....RA should do all the interveiws....thats exactly what we need someone who's not afraid to ask the tough questions....this cat should replace brian kenny.....but for some reason i doubt he would've had such a big mouth if him and floyd where sitting in the same room lol

I was able to watch the Dawson Johnson I. I like how Dawson reacts with the pressure put by Glenn Johnson but of course I like more the style of Glenn because he makes Dawson fight. Without his relentless attack, the fight should have been a little boring. I gave Glenn a slight edge but I was not surprise when Dawson got the decision. The second time around, I picked Glenn to win IF he will sustain his attack to the head and body.

FloydJr said "Philippines got a the best enhancement drugs" - it's his new way of avoiding the Pacman. Get real dude! Only the fool will believe what you are saying. You are just insulting the Technical Members of the boxing world for saying that. Fight the best not the hand-picked, easier and smaller opponent and then claiming you are the best! What a Joke! Now I believe that Pacman will swarm you all the way down. If you really believe that you are the best in the best in the world, then eat this... actions speaks louder than your words.

Let's see before the Pacquiao-Cotto fight, will Floyd make another sudden announcement, just like he did before Pacquiao-Hatton fight? I'll make a guess: He will announce his coming fight against either Ana Julaton or Ivan Calderon. Hmm, I'll pick on Julaton

Li´l Floyd is truly his own father son. This is the son of the man who is accusing Pacquiao using steroid. The man who was arrested and jailed for drug trafficking as part of a ring smuggling cocaine in boxes of laundry detergent in 1993 and served a five yr. sentence in jail. Do we really need to believe for everything this father and son have said? Does anybody notice their muscles? How about their mentalities and their negative reactions whenever they get offended. Does it look normal to you? Get serious now people!

  • #1floydfan 2 years ago
