The CW is taking a bite out of 'The Vampire Diaries' with a possible spin-off

Since his arrival in Mystic Falls on The Vampire Diaries, Klaus has taken over the title of the vampire everyone loves to hate but hates to love.

Now, TVGuide.com confirms that a spin-off is finally in the works that will center on the Originals with Joseph Morgan as Klaus and Phoebe Tonkin, who join The Vampire Diaries this season in a recurring role as werewolf Haley.

The pilot for the potential spin-off, which airs April 25, finds Klaus going to New Orleans, where he will cross paths with his former protege Marcel.

"Klaus was the founding father of New Orleans, and the show is set in that venue" CW President Mark Pedowitz said at the Television Critics Association winter previews. "Klaus is just a great character and the Original Family has such dysfunctional family dynamics. We felt it was a great way to go to take the show."

If the episode does well in the ratings, then the long-awaited spin-off could be a possible contender for the 2013-14 season on the CW with Vampire Diaries writer and executive producer Julie Plec at the helm.

The Vampire Diaries returns with new episodes starting Thursdays at 8pm on the CW.
