The cupcake queen: An interview with Lisa Diemer.
Lisa Diemer, proprietor of Kitchen Chemistry in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, has been baking for nearly as long as she’s been walking. As a child, she went through bulbs in her Easy-Bake Oven quicker than most kids go through clean socks. (Well, almost.) Lisa’s love of cake decorating was birthed at an early age when her father began moonlighting at a bakery. Visions of buttercream roses began dancing in young Lisa’s head. From this point forward, Lisa’s dream of decorating those splendiferous cakes only grew. She later took classes and eventually began teaching cake decorating and soap making in the Stroudsburg and Lehigh Valley areas. For Lisa, cake decorating isn’t just something she does, it’s truly her passion and she’s always more than eager to share that passion with others. Earlier this year, Lisa’s sweet dream, a dream she’d fostered for nearly 15 years, became a reality when she opened the doors of Kitchen Chemistry.

An interview with Lisa Diemer:
Lisa is one of those congenial gals. She’s always smiling and easy to talk to. After just a few seconds with her, you’ll feel like you’ve known her all of your life.
Examiner: How did you feel on the opening day of Kitchen Chemistry?
Lisa: I was so excited to open Kitchen Chemistry because it was a lifetime dream of mine. Because of the Food Network and all the TV shows about cake decorating, I believe this was the best time to open.
Examiner: Tell us how you arrived at the name Kitchen Chemistry?
Lisa: The name represents not just the chemical reaction of baking but also the positive interaction of the students and family members while they are creating sugar art.
Examiner: Is your family involved in the business? Have they been supportive of your venture?
Lisa: We are a true mom and pop operation. My husband and son work together to help the business grow. Everyone from extended family to the community has been so positive and supportive; I’m very grateful.
Examiner: Is it hard to learn to decorate cakes? Can anyone do it, or do you have to have that certain knack?
Lisa: The best part of my business is the classes. I love enabling people to create wonderful, edible art for their families and friends. Anyone with a desire can learn the basic techniques. Before they know it, they want to advance and I make sure they are learning at their own pace.
Examiner: Do you have any advice for others who are considering opening a passion-based business?
Lisa: Being a business owner is like giving birth. No matter what people tell you about the experience, you can’t understand until you do it yourself. It’s hard work but very rewarding. My advice to anyone dreaming of opening a business is to go for it, but do your homework. Ask lots of questions and really hear the answers—don’t just listen to the parts you want to hear.
Examiner: What are your future plans or aspirations for Kitchen Chemistry?
Lisa: I don’t take one minute for granted. I constantly try to figure out what will help my business grow.
Thank you, Lisa. May your dreams continue to be sweet, brimming with cake-fairy-dusted fondant flowers!
