The Crow - other accidents on movie set and the truth behind Brandon Lee's death

Many years have passed since the tragic loss of the talented Brandon Lee, son of legendary martial arts star, Bruce Lee.  It is common knowledge that Brandon died due to a horrific accident involving pyrotechnics on the set but what the public is not as aware of are the many mishaps that occurred during the entire filming of The Crow

Brandon Lee’s death was a result of him being shot and killed by a prop .44 magnum during a scene in which a full-powder blank (gunpowder, but no bullet) was shot at the actor while filming.  Unknown to the firearms tech and crew, a bullet was lodged in the barrel and hit Brandon in his stomach area.

A dear friend of mine, Chad Stahelski, a stunt double I’d worked with for years , stepped in and replaced his friend Brandon in many scenes so that the film could be completed.  They even used digital effects to composite the late Brandon’s face onto Chad’s.  This was heartbreaking for my friend and I commend his commitment to Brandon’s work and for stepping in during his loss in order to honor Brandon’s final performance so the world could see The Crow.

There is controversy about what happened to the actual footage of the tragic accident, some say it was destroyed immediately and others say it was given to the Lee family.

Other accidents on the set are as follows:

On February 1, 1992, the first day of principal photography, a carpenter received serious burns when the scissor lift he was driving came into high voltage power lines; he was also severely shocked.

Heavy storms destroyed some of the sets causing filming delays on March 13.

In a sinister turn of events, a prop master found a live round in one of the prop guns, prior to the death of Brandon Lee.  This is the same type of oversight which caused his death.  This type of coincidence is what causes the urban legends surrounding the young star’s death to continue.

Later a carpenter drove his car into the studio’s plaster shop and another worker was injured because a screwdriver was driven through his hand; also a stuntman fell through the roof of a set.

There are many unanswered questions about The Crew and the unfortunate circumstances surrounding the making of the gothic classic.  But one thing is for sure, the world has lost a tremendous talent and those who knew him will mourn him eternally.
