Everyone seems to have "cronuts" on the brain lately. What is a cronut, you may be asking? A cronut is a croissant-doughnut hybrid that originated in New York earlier this summer and has created a stir around the world. I am beginning to think that cronuts are quite simply the best things to hit my waistline since sliced bread. I recently went on a quest to find the best cronut in California and will be the first one to admit that this was quite a feat to take on.
The first thing that I learned on my quest is that the actual term "Cronut" was trademarked by the Father of Cronuts, Dominique Ansel, of New York in the Spring of 2013. Since then, variations of this dreamy pastry have popped up all over the world under names like, Kronuts, CroNOTS, Brioughnuts and the DoughNOT. “It’s always interesting to kind of figure out what the next trend is going to be. I really didn’t see this one coming and I don’t know why no one has ever done it before. I think it’s an innovative idea.” explains Chanel Martinez of Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in California.
My taste-test experience led me up and down the California coastline and here are my top three picks:
- Kreuzberg Cafe, 685 Higuera St San Luis Obispo, (805) 439-2060, website.
- Semi Sweet Bakery, 105 E. 6th St., Los Angeles, (213) 228-9975, website.
- Posh Bakery, 445 Nelo Street, Santa Clara, (408) 980-8451, website.
Regardless of what you call them, they are little pieces of pastry heaven! Cheers!
