The death of Kevin Thacker is the true story that inspired this film. The real case made national headlines in 1983, when Kevin Charles Thacker's body was found behind the Marshalltown police department in Iowa. Thacker had been arrested for drunk driving at the time of his death. Marshalltown police say, Kevin Thacker had escaped and fallen from the station's roof before his body was later discovered. The investigation revealed that the young man had a sustained injuries to the head and body consistent with a beating, according to The Times Republican.
The victim's family filed a wrongful death suit and won.
The attorney, Stuart Pepper aka Stu Pepper, was hired by Thacker's parents to investigate their son's death. He runs a website dedicated to the entire case. The extensive site includes original coverage of the crime, new evidence and updates in the case.
