In Part 2, we talked about the cost and payback time for storm windows, the Bosch AquaStar tankless water heater, and compact fluorescent light bulbs. In Part 3 we will talk about the Kohler Water Sense water-saving toilet, the 52-inch Harbor Breeze Calera ceiling fan, the GE Energy Star 18.2 cubic foot energy-saving refrigerator-freezer, and caulking.
Please note that the cost guidelines come from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The costs listed below are the average costs for energy-saving features for old and new homes of about 2,500 square feet and based on a family of four.
The Kohler Water Sense water-saving toilet
Cost: $299
Annual Savings: $90
Payback: 3.3 years
The cost is based on the Kohler Water Sense water-saving toilet and water usage for a family of four.
Check with your local utility to see if they offer cash incentives to customers who replace older toilets.
The 52-inch Harbor Breeze Calera ceiling fan
Cost: $80
Annual Savings: $10
Payback: 8 years
Cost is based on the Harbor Breeze ceiling fan with one light and the fan is only used when the room is in use. Ceiling fans lower perceived summer temperatures and can help during the winter months by drawing warm air down from the ceiling; thus, lessening reliance on air conditioning during the summer and the furnace during the winter.
The GE Energy Star 18.2 cubic-foot refrigerator-freezer
Cost: $729
Annual Savings: $90
Payback: 8.1 years
The cost is based on replacing a 1990 model refrigerator-freezer.
Caulking
Costs: $5 - $250
Annual Savings: up to $250
Payback: 1 year or less
This is based on projected savings generated by caulking cracks, gaps, and joints.
Please remember that the costs and projected savings can vary depending on the size of your home, its location, and contractors hired.
