The Corner Pantry located on Falls Road at the foot of Lake Avenue is so much more than tea and crumpets. Chef and co-owner Neill Howell offers a selection of his native British fare along with locally sourced Maryland goodies to eat in, carry-out and enjoy at a catered event.

Let talk lineage, Chef Neill Howell has left his culinary mark in London, Los Angeles and New York where he met his wife and now business partner, Emily, a Baltimore native. He was the executive chef at the successful Baltimore’s Bond Street Social; one might say his stepping stone to the Corner Pantry where it would be his food, his commitment to locally sourced products. Talented is a statement one would use when describing chef’s culinary acumen, his wife’s stylized marketing and their Massachusetts imported pastry chef Julie Sutula’s sweet and savory pastries.

In a recent media dinner, a handful of writers had the opportunity to taste and learn about The Corner Pantry’s edibles and beverage selections. Before we sat at the brown paper covered table with our main courses inked around the candelabra, we enjoyed the crab and corn fritters, mini chicken and waffle BLTs and a palate cleansing citrus and basil granita.

Biscuits with tomato bacon jam awaited us at the table and once seated we were presented a ploughman’s lunch which is normally cheese , chutney, bread, boiled eggs and ham but the Corner Pantry took it to a more creative level with smoked ham hocks, goat cheese, a Scottish quail egg, raisin spelt crostini and piccalilli relish. Served family style we all enjoyed one of their top sellers the kimchee nori soba noodles along with roasted rockfish, summer peach salad, lamb kofta with tahini sauce. Dessert was tiramisu in its own mason jar and a butterscotch passion fruit donut. (NOTE: Every Saturday is donut day with a different variation each week).

Along with the amazing breakfast and beverage offerings for the morning hours and grab n go foods, salad bar, daily specials to eat in or to go, the Corner Pantry also offers afternoon tea. Visit from 2:30 to 4:30 pm daily for this British tradition. The Corner Pantry’s afternoon tea is $12 – includes tea, daily scone (butter, jam or clotted cream + $1), 2 tea sandwiches and petit four.

I would be remiss not to mention that Chef Howell was the Mason Dixon Master Chef champion for 2013 where through bracketed competition against multiple chefs he proved his culinary prowess. I mention this because chef offers demonstration cooking classes at $35 a class or $120 for the series and why not learn from a master chef. Classes are approximately 60 -90 minutes starting at 7 PM. You are welcome to bring your own alcohol. Students will enjoy a taste of each dish and will take recipes home. Here is the cooking class lineup - you can sign up easily online at www.corner-pantry.com:

· Aug 21st – Summer Salads & Dressings

· Sept 11th – Grilled Pizzas

· Oct 16th – British Classics

· Nov 13th – Bites (appetizers)

The Corner Pantry website is quite complete with their regular menu, today’s specials, and catering. They are so close to Lake Roland (Robert E Lee Memorial Park) – you just might want to pick up some delish walk away foods for a picnic.
