The Controversy of Lana Del Rey

Last night's performer on SNL has been stirring up a lot of conversation on the music blogs as of late. The performer of the evening was Lana Del Rey, a young musician who is allegedly a product developed by a big music label. The young musician is new to the scene only as "Lana Del Rey".  She made her first attempts under her real name Lizzy Grant; a bleach blonde, smiley, indie singer, with a Katy Perry fashion sense. After the powers that be got a hold of her she was transformed into a smoldering bombshell with a cross between Jessica Rabbit and Lana Turner with suspiciously large bee stung lips. The playful young singer now has a seductive, "naughty" vibe with music and lyrics to match. She's the girl all the men lust for, the mistress, the trophy wife, your first crush. She has left the hipsters appalled, women rolling their eyes, and teenage boys drooling.

There was big buzz in regards to her performing on SNL before her albums release. It's known as a big honor among artists to grab a spot as the performing guest on the show and the recent choice to have Lana on has left some questioning the shows motives. Is it about ratings?

Del Rey's hit "Video Games", is a nice little pop song with a moody vibe and the singers voice is smooth and sultry on the studio version. As for her live performance I'd say she's a young artist whose still trying to get her "sea legs" when it comes to stage presence. She's a bit awkward but that could work for her or against her. Either she owns it and makes those quirky arm gestures and hip rubs her "thing" or she polishes her moves and maybe adds a mic stand so she has a place to put those hands she doesn't know what to do with.

As for her live singing voice? If this was American Idol I certainly don't think she'd be the winner but maybe she'd be on the American Idol World Tour. In my opinion I don't think she's a bad singer. I just think this is all new to her and was thrust into the limelight prematurely.

This poses some questions though:

Is the controversy overshadowing her talent?

Or is the music industry manipulating what the public should consider talent?
