Would your opinion on the debt ceiling change if you discovered we passed that milestone five months ago? Would you feel duped, used, or even somewhat naïve for believing the hype about the magic date of October 15th? In an article last week by Forbes that is exactly what is alleged. (http://www.forbes.com/sites/jeffreydorfman/2013/10/03/dont-believe-the-debt-ceiling-hype-the-federal-government-can-survive-without-an-increase/). His assertions are backed up by the Daily Treasury statements that locked the total public debt outstanding at $16,006,241 from May 17th to September 30th. (http://www.fms.treas.gov/dts/index.html ) The number suddenly jumps past the ceiling on the first day of the October 1st continuing resolution shutdown.
So we the American public are witness to an elaborate confidence game, or in the vernacular "con game”. A con game is an attempt to defraud a person or group after first gaining their confidence (trust). It exploits characteristics of the human psyche such as honesty, vanity, compassion, naiveté or greed. In the book “Confessions of a Confidence Man” all classic cons have five basic steps.
1) Preparation: Prior to the scheme plan employment of assistants (Distribute Democratic talking points to allies in the press and party)
2) Approach: Getting in touch with victims (Easy enough with the presidential bully pulpit)
3) Build-up: Rousing and sustaining interest of victim show him chance to profit. (Closing of monuments, parks, and anything to get the public’s attention)
5) The Hurrah: No con complete without the unexpected development where mark is pushed over the edge. (Suddenly the CR and debt limit will not allow US to pay its bills)
So what is the point of this sting? First and foremost is to once more raise taxes on the few and fewer working Americans. The second is since Obama was moving money around to pay for his pet projects and the end of the physical year prevents this from continuing. The bills put off can’t wait any more or will be exposed. This is why he must take a tough stand of no negotiations no matter what the Republicans propose unless he gets all he needs. Using Saul Alinsky’s rule number one “power is only what the opposition thinks you have".
The importance of this issue to Obama can’t be understated. He has hidden Biden away at Camp David (still open despite shutdown) to control the message. He has threatened default expressly to Wall Street and the American public. His press corps highlights a skewed poll claiming the Republicans are to blame but down plays his 37% approval rating. Ex Chicago lawyer now chief of the International Monetary Fund Christine Lagarde suddenly announced the world economy was recovering and then they discovered the debt ceiling. Every good plan has problems and Harry Reid almost gave it away warning the DC mayor not to blow it.
Any good con relies on timing and this is no exception. Obama turned down the six month increase since he needs a year’s worth of unrestricted spending to help elect more progressives into government. By the time Americans figure out they were conned it will be too late. Obamcare will be even less affordable, undocumented Democratic voters will have citizenship and the right to tax dollars, and complainers will still be called racist.
If you still believe in Hope and Change and don’t feel you are being conned contact the author who will put you in touch with a Nigerian government official who only needs an American bank account number to deposit millions in funds.
