Most people assume all diabetics are on insulin or some oral medication like Metformin. Many type 2 diabetics are able to manage their diabetes with exercise and herbal remedies.
Some useful herbs:
Many local grocery stores and health food stores sell herbal supplements. Herbs can also be grown in your own gardens or bought at Lancaster Central Market.
Another great resource is the Conestoga Herb Guild. The Guild will hold its 9th Annual Herb Fest on Saturday, 13 September. The Herb Fest will run 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Boettcher House Museum, located at Landis Woods in Manheim Township. Landis Woods is located at the intersection of Meadow Lane and Route 501/Lititz Pike on the south side of Neffsville. Admission to the Fest is free. There will be demonstrations, lavender crafts, herbal wreaths, as well as items for sale.
Some herbs can cause serious side effects. Some may counteract other medications. As with any change to your diet or medicine, you should seek the counsel of your physician before incorporating herbal remedies into your daily diabetes management.
