Come on down to the City Auditorium in Concord and enjoy the quirky humor and splendid harmonies of Concords own Barbershop Chorus and several featured quartets. The performance begins Sunday, October 3, 2010 at 2 pm. Box office ticket prices are $12-$15
Audiences have thrilled to the tight harmonies of four part male singing groups since the mid-1800 when just about every barber’s shop had a quartet. In 1938 O.C. Cash and Rupert Hall created the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America, Inc. (SPEBSQSA). In 2004 a new “brand name” was adopted by the Society, which shortened the legal name down to Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS). The truth is that it really doesn’t matter what you call the society the result is the same: great music and great entertainment.
The Concord Coachmen chorus, directed by Eric Ruthenberg, is a member of the BHS Northeast District and will be competing later this month at the Northeastern District Convention in Portland, ME.
Three wonderful quartets come out of the Concord Coachmen’s chorus:, D’Accord, Rewind, and Average Joes, the 2010 Granite and Pine Division Champion quartet. Each quartet will perform on Sunday’s program along with special guest quartet Roadshow. This high-energy quartet won the Boston Regional Harmony Sweepstakes in 2009. Roadshow went on to be among the finalists in the 2009 National Harmony Sweepstakes.
The wonderful thing about Barbershop singing is that it is accessible to a wide age range; youth all the way to retirees and everything in between. The BHS is dedicated to developing the next generation of singers by offering enrichment programs to support local high school music programs, and workshops for both singers and educators. The BHS Society organizes Youth festivals and regional multi-day Harmony Explosion Camps. The Society also has a collegiate chapter and competitions.
The Concord Coachmen Chorus proudly proclaims, “We always welcome visitors!!!” They rehearse every Thursday at the Concord Community Music School. Rehearsals begin at 7:30 p.m.
