This is the first in a series of six articles focused on community colleges.
It is never too early to think about college for your kids. While four year universities offer great options, community colleges have just as many benefits. A good idea is to talk with your teenagers about what they are thinking college-wise, and then give your opinions on why a community college may be better for them. And don’t forget to visit the colleges of interest, both two and four year. It is a wonderful opportunity to see exactly what each school has to offer.
One major benefit of a community college education is the cost. The first two years, students study their general education classes, and while they do that at university as well, the price difference can be staggering. Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s semester hour rate for in-district is $193.60 versus a $78 average of five local community colleges.
The question should be do I need to take English 101 for the approximate cost of $234 or $581. The answer should be simple. You would not buy a pair of Manolo Blahnik’s for $1,000 if you can get the same exact shoe (and not a knock-off) for $500, right? So why pay more for your college education if you don’t have to. Plus, when you transfer to the four year institution, you can solely focus on your degree program.
Also, community colleges are often right in your own backyard. This offers the chance for your student to go to college without the stress of rent. It helps keep the students focused.
Another advantage is smaller class sizes. While it is often larger than rural schools, it is still smaller than a university. This is a great way for students to smoothly transition to the college environment, without feeling overwhelmed and out of their element. Plus, they will probably know more than a few other students due to being in a local environment.
Community colleges realize the necessity for school activities, and offer a variety of clubs, intramural sports teams, shows, and events. This is another way to get involved in a smaller group of members, where again, it is less overwhelming.
Whatever your academic goals, you should not rule out the community college environment for your general education classes. You just might find it is the perfect fit.

I agree with this article.... it is a nice transition from high school to a community college
I know of a physician that stated he went to a Junior college first then proceeded with the rest of is education and became a very successful physician. He said there are advantages to going to a junior college before attempting the educational curriculum of a university and does make the transition a lot smoother.
