Just in time for Mother’s Day, George C. Wolfe’s satirical commentary on the African-American experience, “The Colored Museum,” will be presented from May 9-11 for four shows only at the Stage Aurora Performance Hall in north JAX. The show is directed by Dee Quaranta and Darryl Reuben Hall.

“Wolfe expresses the African-American journey through museum exhibits, which come to life and tell their individual stories of joy, acceptance, being rejected, and understanding their place in society in a much different approach than the seriousness of ‘A Raisin in the Sun’ or ‘For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf,’” says Hall.

About the play: The summary of the story is eleven short snippets depicting the African American culture. These snippets are ‘Git on Board’, ‘Cookin with Aunt Ethel’, ‘The Photo Shoot’, ‘Solider with a Secret’, ‘The Gospel According to Miss Roj’, ‘The Hairpiece’, ‘The Last Mama-on-the-Couch Play’, ‘Symbiosis’, ‘Lala's Opening’, ‘Permutations’, and ‘The Party’.

The play is a depiction of the history of racism against African Americans, from the institution of slavery through the oppressive economic and social conditions that continue to make life difficult for many African Americans today.

The Colored Museum is the Winner of the Dramatists Guild Award and has electrified, discomforted and delighted audiences of all colors, redefining our ideas of what it means to be black in contemporary America.

The full cast of The Colored Museum are:
