On, Thursday, January 16, 2014, the Colorado Chill, who were the newest basketball team in the American Basketball Association (ABA) from Colorado faced the Shizuoka Gymrats from Shizuoka Japan. This was the first game the Gymrats have played in Colorado this season. I spoke with Dameon Page, the Owner of and a player on the team, prior to the game and he was truly excited to be involved with the ABA in Colorado and very excited to be playing a team like the Gymrats from another country as their Inagural Game.
When looking at the two competitors you would think the Gymrats would be truly outplayed by the Chill as they had enough players to play with one player to substitute as a relief for the others and the fact that only one of their players was in the 6 foot range, who just happens to be from the US and plays with the Gymrats every season, but this was not so.
As the game started both teams seemed to be pretty well matched as both teams attempted to figure out the playing style of each. The first half of the game ended with the Chill having only a 6 point lead. The game stayed pretty well at the mercy of either team until the last period of the second half when the Chill picked up pace and managed to continue to broaden the lead over the Gymrats 20+ points.
The game ended with a final score of 105 Chill and 74 for the Gymrats. The game was a great success for the Chill and the Gymrats gave them a very good game. The next game for the Chill will be on Saturday February 1, 2014, against the Colorado Kings at Overland High School, at 7:30 pm.
