The movie opens with young husband and father Matt Kell making a video tape for his young sons. Matt succumbs to his terminal cancer diagnosis on Christmas day 2005, leaving his widow, Gina (Chabert) and two young boys to cope with the pain of his loss.
The Kells belong to close church community and they receive loving support from Pastor Karl (Alex Zahara), family and friends. Gina wants to be close to her boys so she starts to volunteer at the church elementary school, where she meets the Spehn children, Jack (Logan Williams), Danny (Callum Airlie) and Charlotte (Alison Thornton).
In a gut-wrenching coincidence, the Spehn family experiences loss just weeks after Matt’s death. Cathy Spehn is hospitalized with a headache which turns out to be an inoperable brain tumor, leaving her distraught husband, Michael (Christie), to care for their three kids on his own.
Matt and Cathy had been childhood friends from school, but their spouses never met. Gina attends Cathy's funeral, where she meets Michael for the first time.
Gina and Michael lean on eachother through their grief as they deal with their tragic losses. Friendship develops between the parents and the children become fast friends. Soon, the two families are spending time together, as they all heal with laughter, compassion and faith.
As the families intertwine, Gina and Michael realize that their friendship is blossoming into love. They wonder if it could really be that easy, but are surprised when friends and family object to the new romance and plans to unite the two families as one. Eventually, they overcome the obstacles and open their hearts to love again. The movie ends with their wedding, all five children standing up as attendants.
