The Civil Wars open for Taylor Swift at Grammys, get laughs and awards

The 54th annual Grammy Awards took place on Sunday, February 12, 2012 at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles.  Once again, the event proved to be one of the most exciting of the year, with performances by several of the top names in music and awards presentations to celebrate the artists who were best in their genres over the past year.

Among the performers were new duo, The Civil Wars, who recently collaborated with Taylor Swift on a song for the upcoming film, The Hunger Games.  In their first-ever Grammy appearance, The Civil Wars proved quite entertaining.   Referring to the big name artists who had already performed on the Grammys earlier in the evening, including Sir Paul McCartney, John Paul White of The Civil Wars had this to say when they took the stage:

"We'd like to thank all of our opening acts tonight, especially that promising kid from Liverpool."

His partner, Joy Williams, laughed along with the audience then went on to say, "But everybody is somebody's opening act and for the next 60 seconds, we're proud to stand here in the center of music's biggest night and be the opening act for our friend, Taylor, who just happens to be one of the biggest stars in the world."

The Civil Wars went on to sing an excerpt from their Billboard 200, top 20 song, Barton Hollow from the album by the same name.   Though The Civil Wars may have only had 60 seconds, they made quite an impression in a short amount of time, singing with passion and beautiful harmony.  That same harmony may have factored in to the two wins The Civil Wars picked up in the pre-telecast ceremony.

The Civil Wars took home their first Grammy Awards for Best Folk Album for Barton Hollow and Best Country Duo or Group Performance for the title song.
