Throughout an arduous three years of chemotherapy, radiation and three major surgeries, Rip Scott has been inspired to do everything he can in the fight against cancer. It is his hope that others will not have to face the overwhelming physical and emotional adversity he has battled since his diagnosis of Stage 3 and Stage 4 metastatic head and neck cancer in 2007. The father of four from Newtown Square is riding for the third time in the LIVESTRONG Challenge Philly, August 21-22, with the goal of raising an incredible $50,000 for the fight against cancer.

Rip formed TEAM SCOTT in honor of the doctors, nurses, therapists, family and friends who have joined him in his fight. Last year, Rip and his team of supporters raised $30,000 for LIVESTRONG.

“It is my obligation to fight this disease in any way possible,” said Scott. “To raise awareness, to raise funds, to counsel those waging their own battles, to ensure none of my kids will ever hear a cancer diagnosis.”

The LIVESTRONG Challenge Series is the signature fundraising event for LIVESTRONG, the Austin-based organization founded by cancer survivor and champion cyclist Lance Armstrong to inspire and empower people affected by cancer. The Challenges, which include a bike, run and walk, have raised more than $60 million for the fight against cancer over the past 13 years and take place in Seattle, San Jose, Philadelphia and Austin.

The LIVESTRONG Challenge Philadelphia takes place in the suburb of Blue Bell at Montgomery County Community College, 340 DeKalb Pike, Blue Bell, PA 19422. The LIVESTRONG Village, a health and wellness expo, will give participants the chance to sample new products and preview new merchandise. Online registration for the Philly Challenge is closed, but people can still register in person at the LIVESTRONG Village Fri., Aug. 20, 2-8pm for the 5 or 10K and ride; Sat., Aug. 21, 8:30am-2pm for the ride; and Sun., Aug. 22, 6-7am for the ride.
