Being a first time mother can be overwhelming. There may be feelings of excitement and joy as well as fear and anxiety for the unknown. It is also a life changing experience. Not only do moms have to take care of themselves, but there is now having to take care of an infant who is entirely dependent on the mother, no matter what state the mother is in.
Some San Antonio first time mothers may be at a further disadvantage because financial limitations may close the doors on some resources and programs that are otherwise accessible to families without financial challenges. Yet, all mothers, whether financially stable or not, deserve to have the support it takes in raising in child especially for the child's sake.
Realizing this vital and true principle, The Children's Shelter in San Antonio has begun enrolling first time mothers who meet federal income poverty levels into the Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP). According to the National NFP website, "this program allows nurses to deliver the support first-time moms need to have a healthy pregnancy, become knowledgeable and responsible parents, and provide their babies with the best possible start in life." Once an expectant first time mother is enrolled, nursers will come and provide in home visits beginning early in the pregnancy up until the child's second birthday. Nurses provide support and education, as well as counseling on health, behavioral concerns and self-sufficiency issues. For moms to enroll and determine eligibility they must call Gloria Villareal at (210) 212-2534
